Project -273.15 was based on entropy and the 2nd law of thermodynamics. This law in the world of physics states that in an isolated system, entropy — simply put, disorder — can only increase. This concept was applied to the act of painting itself, in which the technique used — acrylic pouring — causes the artwork to become increasingly chaotic as it is made, as it is impossible to “unmix” the paint and return to order.

The project’s title refers to the so-called absolute zero — the lowest possible temperature with a complete absence of heat and energy — which is equivalent to -273.15 degrees Celsius. According to the 3rd law of thermodynamics, absolute zero is the temperature at which entropy reaches its minimum value. There is no molecular motion, no chaos or disorder. Hence, if the painting process embodies entropy with the pouring of liquid paint and the constant mixing of it, the final result represents zero entropy and absolute zero — the paint has dried and movement has ceased.

My perspective on this project has evolved over time, and I started to look at it from yet another angle — the idea of art and painting having their own “thoughts”. Although these artworks are not random, it is humanly impossible to reproduce them in exactly the same way due to the inherent inconsistency of the technique used. Thus, it opens up the possibility for art to reveal its own desires throughout the process. The final result demonstrates the dialogue between me and my art — highlighting the wills, whims and thoughts of matter.
